Protection for tenants

Do you need insurance as a tenant?

On average, tenants have £25,000 worth of contents in their homes but only 52% protect those belongings with insurance. It may not be a legal requirement, but could you afford to replace everything you have in the event of loss or damage? And would you want to sacrifice your savings to do so? Stats based on research conducted by Nationwide Building Society.

Frequently asked questions

  • What is Tenant's insurance?

Tenants insurance protects your contents from perils such as fire/flood/storm/theft/vandalism. Accidental damage, or cover for items away from the home are popular additions to this type of policy. Some policies also cover damage to the Landlord’s property.

  • What’s the renewal process?

If you’re insured with us, we will be in touch with you around 30 days before your renewal date. Before we get in touch, we will already have re-priced for you so that we can be sure the cover we are arranging is appropriate and cost effective.

  • Why didn’t my last Agent offer me this?

We don’t know either. We think everyone should be placed in an informed position about insurance, and how it can protect your finances as well as your belongings. We think that starts with a conversation about what’s most valuable to you.

  • I’m moving into an Ultralets property, but I already have insurance. What should I do?

Firstly, it’s great to hear you have cover. It’s important to us that our Tenants have the right product in place, even if it doesn’t come from us. Before you move in, send us a copy of your insurance schedule and we’ll check it for you. It may be appropriate, or it may be that we think we can find you something better in time for your renewal - either way you’ll get an honest answer from us.

  • Why is your offering different to buying online?

Places like Banks or Price Comparison Sites ask a list of extremely specific questions about the property (I.e what kind of locks it has or how far it is away from water) that can easily be inputted wrongly, causing you issues at the point of claim. They then list the providers in order of price, with very limited ability to see the differences between options.

At Ultralets, although we understand that price is important, we think it’s vital that clients are informed about the various options open to them. For example, Insurer A may be cheaper but Insurer B may allow you to pay monthly for free which may work out cheaper over the year. We do the research around this so that you don’t have to.

  • Do I need Tenant's insurance?

Tenant’s Insurance is not a legal requirement, however it is really valuable as it protects the things that are important to you as well as your savings from having to replace items in the event of loss or damage.

  • I’m moving with a pet, will you cover pet damage?

Yes! We do have a provider that covers damage by pets. Speak to our Advisor to find out more about this.

  • I’m only planning to be in this property for 6 months, but insurance is done in 12 month terms. What do you recommend?

We see this quite a lot, that’s why we have insurers on our panel who don’t charge to cancel or move a policy to another property. We’ll do this administration for you as part of our free advice service.

  • Will I not save money by going direct to the insurer?

In some instances, yes. However it is important to know that the product X insurer offers on their website differs from the products offered by intermediaries like ourselves. (You will see a different product again on the price comparison sites). Buying direct also means you miss out on the advice that we offer for free, as well as the benefits that come with arranging your insurance ‘In-house’ with the people who know the property.

Things like how long your Tenancy is expected to last, so that you can avoid cancellation fees where possible is another way we add value.

  • Do you do home insurance as well?

Yes, we have some fantastic options for home insurance too. If you’re thinking of buying a property then please get in touch.
