Renter's Guide to a Proper Flat

20 Jul 2015

One day you will have to move out from your parents’ house and rent out a flat or a house to start living on your own. While this seems daunting at first, it is merely the first step of the bigger adventure we know as life. Before essaying to sign a paper, of course, there are a few things you should have in mind. Renting a flat is not as simple as pointing at the ad in the paper you like and dialing up the phone to a successful deal.

When you start looking for a flat or house, the first thing you should consider is location. Think of all the choices you have for a place, and pick the lifestyle that you like best. Different areas in a city or town will always provide a new option for a lifestyle – the sociability of crowds in big cities or the friendly and peaceful suburbs, for example. Pick something that suits you, look for a proper place and settle in.

But what constitutes as a proper place? You should always inspect the flat before renting, and inspect it thoroughly as well. Make sure everything is in order and make sure everything works – you do not want to end up in a place where you will have to fix everything before you actually start living there. And make sure you get a clean place as well. Starting your tenancy with a home cleaning is definitely not the best way to start your new life. If the previous tenant did not end his tenancy with an end of lease cleaning, you should definitely not give a deposit to the landlord, and you can definitely negotiate a better rent.

A good way to find a proper place is to get a real estate agent. He or she will find you the best place in no time, as long as you can afford it.

Once you are a tenant, try and keep your new flat intact. Spring cleaning is of the utmost importance, at the very least. You need to keep your flat in shape if not because of the joy of living in a clean flat, then because the landlord might pay you occasional visits to inspect his or her property. Vacuum every now and then to get the dirt out, and keep the windows clean to get as much daylight as possible. And just like you did before becoming a tenant, make sure everything in the flat works. If you cannot be bothered with regular cleanings, you can always hire a cleaning agency to gladly do it for you for the right amount.

Now you can start that new chapter of your life, living on your own as a free tenant.
