Tips and Advice for Tenants

06 Jul 2015

People think that being a tenant is the easiest thing in the world. After all, all you need to do is occupy a house, right? Well, no – at least not if you want to continue being a tenant. The landlord or landlady does have his or her responsibility to keep everything in your home from breaking, but that does not mean that you do have the freedom to keep breaking them. A good tenant is one who puts effort into maintaining his home just as much as the landlord. And here are some tips and advices on how to do it properly.

  • Clean often. The most reasonable thing you can do with your place is do some home cleaning. In the long run, this concerns even the flat or house itself, as an overdue cleaning may be the reason why now your place stinks and looks awful because of all the accumulated mold. Put the broom or vacuum to good use every now and then to take care of all the dust so that you can breathe freely – now and in the future. Wipe the windows clean to add breaths of freshness in your place. Mop up the floor and let it dry properly – a dank floor can lead to the aforementioned mold accumulation. Try to avoid that as it is harmful to your health and the rooms’. If you think that you cannot do a proper job, just hire a cleaning agency. You may even opt for a regular cleaning service - the professional cleaners will probably do a better job of keeping your house clean.
  • Do appliance maintenance. Make sure everything works. And if something does not, do not immediately call the landlord to fix it. First make an effort of finding out what the problem is, and why not fixing it yourself even, if the job falls within your capabilities. Also, knowing exactly what the problem is will make your landlord’s work much easier. If the breaking is your fault, do not immediately dump the issue on the landlord and ask for a swift fix. You may even go so far as to hire your own repairman, or ask for a repairman’s number from the landlord instead of burdening him or her with something that is completely your fault.
  • Keep down the noise. Nobody likes loud neighbors. If constant loud music and high-volume TV-watching is in your lifestyle, this will probably raise many complaints which will bring you trouble with your landlord. Avoid that to have a better understanding with the landlord and with the neighbors.
  • Pay your taxes regularly. Do not fall back on bills and do not ask for payment postponements. Instead, try to have the money on time in order to sustain a good relationship with the landlord and avoid the chance of you being kicked out unexpectedly.
  • Do regular inspections. Your landlord may have the option to do house inspections every once in a while, but that does not mean you should not do some of those yourself. Pick a day of the month and on that day start going around the house and checking for problems. Are all appliances working? Did the cleaners miss a spot? Are there any damp places? Be thorough to be safe.

Follow these advices in order to have a happy landlord, and a clean, pleasant home.
