Ultralets rolls out digital Right to Rent checks

03 Dec 2024

Ultralets is committed to ensuring the security and compliance of our rental properties. To streamline the tenant verification process and enhance security measures, we have implemented digital Right to Rent checks, powered by Digidentity.

What is Right to Rent?
The Right to Rent scheme is a UK government initiative designed to prevent illegal immigration and ensure that landlords and letting agents only rent properties to individuals who have the legal right to live and work in the UK.

How does Right to Rent work?
Landlords and letting agents are legally obligated to check the identity documents of prospective tenants to verify their right to rent in the UK. This involves inspecting original documents, such as passports or driving licenses.

Ultralets and digital Right to Rent
To streamline this process and enhance security, Ultralets has implemented digital Right to Rent checks powered by Digidentity. This innovative solution allows us to verify tenant identity documents online, ensuring compliance with the Right to Rent legislation.

Important note:
While the Right to Rent scheme applies to all individuals who rent in the UK, our current digital service is limited to British and Irish citizens who hold a valid passport (including Irish passport cards).

How does Digidentity work?
With Digidentity, we can now conduct Right to Rent checks entirely online. This efficient process involves:
  1. Enrolling: Tenants are sent a confirmation email informing them that Ultralets has requested their use of Digidentity.
  2. Activation: Tenants then follow instructions on their email to create their account and download the Digidentity app (the app is essential in order to capture images and scan the NFC found in their passport)
  3. Verification: Tenants will be guided through the process of imaging their ID documentation, scanning their passport and taking a selfie photo, which is then compared against their ID, all securely verified by reading the NFC chip in their password.
  4. Confirmation: Back at the office, we receive confirmation within minutes of a successful Right to Rent check, meaning that we can proceed with the final arrangements for the tenant's move-in without waiting for an opportune time for them to visit the office.
Digital Right to Rent checks offer numerous advantages, including streamlined efficiency, accurate tenant verification, guaranteed compliance with the Right to Rent legislation, and enhanced security for landlords and letting agents, safeguarding them from potential legal repercussions. By adopting this digital solution, we are exercising our commitment to providing a seamless and secure tenant verification process. We are proud to be one of our area's leading agents at the forefront of technological advancements in the property industry.
